Want to make homemade brownies SO GOOD they don’t need any added chocolate chunks? These brownies are fudgy, flavorful and hold their own against other over-the-top desserts. Sometimes it’s just nice to have a warm brownie.
I always make a festive pan of homemade brownies for teachers at Christmas time. It’s easy, cheap, and everyone loves brownies!
Homemade Brownies From Amanda
This recipe was given to me by my oldest sister, Amanda. She is so loving, sweet, and a spiritual giant. And she has the kindest soul. There were 6 girls in my family and Amanda was really into health and fitness. I have a lot of memories of doing workout videos together in pajamas.
We also all loved to bake treats 🙂 Not the best combo if you’re looking for certain results, I realize now, but we can recognize a good recipe when we see one!
When she emailed me the recipe, she said chocolate chips and frosting don’t do it justice.
And our mom said “Don’t mess with perfection!”
It is totally true! These homemade brownies really can stand on their own two feet! I added chocolate chips to this Christmas batch because it was a present but my kids ate some too and they all told me they preferred them without the chocolate chips.
Oh well! Their teachers just had to suffer through eating that extra chocolate.

How to Make Homemade Brownies
To get started, preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
Melt 4 sticks of butter (2 cups) and mix with 4 cups of sugar.
Add 8 eggs and 4 teaspoons of vanilla extract.
Then mix for at least two minutes with a stand mixer or hand mixer. You just want it to be lighter in color and fluffier. You can see the difference in the next two pictures.
This step of whipping it till it’s fluffy creates the shiny, cracked crust you always see on brownies.
Dump in all your dry ingredients in the bowl at once and then mix. The dry ingredients are 2 cups of flour, 1 and 1/3 cups unsweetened baking cocoa, 1 teaspoon baking powder, and 1 teaspoon of salt.
Use the measuring spoon to break up any clumps in the baking powder. That’s the only thing that’ll taste weird if you accidentally get a clump of it when you’re eating the brownies.
Mix everything until just combined.
I like dumping them in and just having one bowl to clean.
Side note: Hershey’s baking cocoa gives you the best chocolate flavor. I’ve tried a lot of brands and cheaper store brands and I’m telling you, there really is a superior taste with the Hershey’s brand.
Here’s the link to a large container but you can find it at any store in the baking aisle: Hershey’s Cocoa
Another side note: the recipes for their chocolate cake and frosting and really delicious!
Line a half sheet pan will parchment paper and pour the batter evenly.
Bake at 350 degrees F for about 25 minutes for a really smooshy brownie.
Give it another 5 minutes in the oven if you want them to be a little more firm.
Add Some Sprinkles!
Sprinkle color sugar on the top while they’re warm then let cool completely before cutting.
You can dye your own sugar crystals with a few drops of food dye
OR
you find some here: Colored Sugar Sprinkles
I like using sugar instead of sprinkles because they’re still pretty and they’re not rock-hard like a lot of regular sprinkles. They just add a little bit of crispiness to the top without getting in the way of the brownies.

Notes
The baking time will vary depending on how smooshy you like your brownies. 25 minutes will give you a very fudgy brownie. Add a few minutes if you want them a little more baked but it's something you'll have to play around with.
Add color sugar sprinkles to the top to make them festive for any occasion without adding much to the texture.
Even though these are delicious on their own, you can add 2 cups of chocolate chips if you're wanting a little more decadence!
